**Key takeaways**

1. **A form fill isn't proof of interest.** Gartner finds 67% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free experience, yet 69% still check AI answers with a rep, and the form sits in the gap between those numbers. (The figures are sourced. Reading the form as that gap is inference.)
2. **"Lead" hides three different people.** Some ran out of page, some chose you, and some traded details for a download. Your report counts them the same. (Inference, labelled as such in the article.)
3. **Add one column to your lead report.** Ask "what did this person need that the page didn't say?", and sort your last 20 leads that way before you change any page.

Reading a page or asking an AI costs almost nothing. A call costs time and invites a pitch. So a person becomes the route buyers take after the cheaper ones have run out.

Gartner's own model of the buying journey has a step for the moment that follows. It calls the step validation and describes the buyer's state this way: "We think we know the right answer, but we need to be sure."

Buyers do not lean on reps out of greater trust. In the May survey, 51% said generative AI is more likely to mislead them, and 49% said the same of sales reps. Distrust is nearly equal on both sides.

What a rep offers, on this reading, is someone who can answer a follow-up question and who has something at stake. Research on accountability points the same way. Jennifer Lerner of Carnegie Mellon and Philip Tetlock of Ohio State described how people who expect to justify a decision to others shift their focus from how well a choice works to how well they can defend it.

A named person is easier to defend than a chatbot's answer.

The shift did not start with AI.

### Where buyer time goes

Gartner's breakdown, from a 2021 Gartner slide deck (750 buyers), splits the whole purchase like this:

| Activity | Share of buying time |
| --- | --- |
| Researching independently, online | 27% |
| Meeting with the buying group | 22% |
| Researching independently, offline | 18% |
| Meeting with potential suppliers | 17% |
| Other | 16% |

The deck shows these proportions for key buying activities. Gartner's 2018 research put it plainly: buyers spend about two-thirds of the time researching, learning and meeting with peers independently of suppliers, and just 17% of their time meeting suppliers, so with three suppliers each gets about 5%. Part of that time is a real burden: 15% goes to de-conflicting information alone. (Source: [aug24srahimian 779780 +2)](https://www.brighttalk.com/resource/core/357452/aug24srahimian_779780.pdf)

### How complicated the research is

- **Buyers define the problem themselves.** In 2019, buyers identified 89% of business problems without supplier input, and the committee they then convened averaged about 11 people. (Source [challengerinc)](https://challengerinc.com/the-challenger-customer-profiles/)
- **Information overload.** A 2021 Gartner deck shows a group of 6 to 10 people, 4.5 information sources per stakeholder, and 77% of buyers reporting high purchase difficulty.
- **Sources have grown.** By the 2026 survey, buyers used an average of seven information sources during a recent purchase. ### The ways they find information

- **Digital self-service:** In 2022, 83% preferred ordering or paying through digital commerce, and by 2026, 70% preferred a completely digital, self-service experience. - **Supplier digital channels:** The 2023 survey found that the supplier's website was the most used channel, followed by supplier social media, an online search for the supplier, and interactive tools like calculators. - **Third parties:** Buyers valued third-party interactions, such as reviews, references and expert consultations, 1.4x more than digital supplier interactions. YouTube was the top social channel, and LinkedIn ranked fifth. - **AI:** 45% of buyers used GenAI, mainly to gather information on vendors and products. Trust is split, with 51% saying GenAI is more likely to mislead them and 49% saying the same of sales reps. (Source: [gartner)](https://www.gartner.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2026-05-20-gartner-survey-finds-sixty-nine-percent-of-b-two-b-buyers-turn-to-sales-reps-to-validate-ai-generated-insights)
- **Reps:** Gartner's 2026 release says reps remain the most important source when buyers research a business problem, identify a preferred supplier and secure internal support, and finalize the purchase. In 2024, Gartner analyst Adnan Zijadic said buyers are 2.3 times more likely to get value affirmation from a rep than from a digital interaction. ### What this means for content

1. Most of the journey happens before a rep is involved, so your content is what buyers meet first.
2. Independent proof (reviews, references, expert views) beats supplier-owned channels for confidence.
3. Buyers avoid irrelevant outreach: 73% actively avoid suppliers who send it.

Why a call comes last

Two of every three business buyers say they would rather buy without talking to a sales rep, according to a Gartner survey of 646 buyers published in March 2026.

A second Gartner release, covering 645 buyers surveyed over the same months, found that 69% still prefer to check what an AI told them with a rep. The people who fill in your contact form sit in the gap between those two numbers. Few reports on digital marketing leads say which side of the gap a lead came from.

"B2B buyers are more comfortable using digital channels and GenAI to navigate the purchase process on their own, but that does not eliminate the role of the seller," said Robert Blaisdell, a vice president analyst and chief of research in Gartner's sales practice.

That pairing changes what a form fill means. Lead reports tend to treat a submitted form as proof of interest. The Gartner numbers suggest it is often something else: the moment a buyer wants validation of his/her findings.

## The buyers who read first

The buyers in Gartner's 2025 survey used an average of seven information sources during a recent purchase. Forty-five percent used generative AI. Seventy percent said they prefer a fully digital, self-service experience.

The rep-free figure rose to 67% from 61% in Gartner's previous survey, although the two surveys may not word the question identically.

Alyssa Cruz, a senior principal analyst at Gartner, said buyers are "progressing through critical buying tasks in more autonomous ways, and sellers can't rely on static collateral to carry influence in those moments."

Marketers see the same pattern from their side. In a survey reported in 2022, 6sense found that respondents said only 3.5% of their website visitors filled in a form. That figure is self-reported and four years old, so it shows a direction, not a benchmark.

## What goes on at the form

In a few seconds, the person weighs four things: whether another way exists, what the follow-up will cost, what they will get and when, and whether they can explain the decision to a boss.

## Not everyone believes gates are dead

Gated content still has defenders, and some of the numbers are on their side. In Demand Gen Report's 2024 content preferences survey, sponsored by Emerald Studio, 45% of respondents said they were somewhat likely to fill in a form for a gated asset. Another 38% said they were very likely if the content was high value.

The survey does not disclose its sample size or field dates, and it measures stated willingness, not behaviour.

The reader who wants a whitepaper and the reader who wants a call are different buyers. A single form asks both to behave the same way.

Nor does the evidence settle the argument.

## What to change, and how to test it

A live call needs care. Buyers who prefer to buy alone will probably find a call the most demanding step, so offer it as a choice next to email. That is inference. Promise a callback only if you can keep it. Say when calls are answered, because time zones will otherwise decide for you. Get consent before recording; the rules differ by country, and the EU's are strict. Think twice before putting an AI voice agent on validation calls: a buyer who came for a person may not accept a machine.

To test all this, read your last 20 leads and sort them into the three kinds. Then run one page with ungated answers and a situation-specific door against your current page, and judge both on qualified pipeline across a full sales cycle. B2B traffic is low and cycles are long, so a small test can mislead.

Next to the lead count in your next report, add one column: what did this person need that the page did not say?

If you want a second reader on that sort, get in touch.
